With another long weekend coming up next week, it’s perfect to spend your days off out of town, hike mountains, or quickly escape to nearby beaches. Planning your next trip for the long weekend? Visit some of the historical places in the country and learn while traveling!

The National History Month is in full swing and Agoda shares five destinations where you can get a lesson in Philippine culture and history –minus the boring professor! You can hit two birds with one stone: You can enjoy a field trip, and you also learn about the country’s history.

Here are the five historical places you need to visit this National History Month:

1. Enjoy the view from Mount Samat National Shrine

Built atop the historic Mount Samat in Balanga Bataan, the Dambana ng Kagitingan (Shrine of Valor), is a picturesque location that commemorates the fallen heroes of the Second World War. Components of the shrine are designed by prominent Filipino artists, making it an excellent venue that balances art appreciation and history.

If you’re looking to continue your history lesson, head to Las Casas Filipinas de Acuzar, which is recognized by Historic Hotels Worldwide for its Spanish colonial-era architecture and design.

2. Walk back in time in Calle Crisologo

A stroll through Calle Crisologo, a 15th century Spanish street in Vigan, Ilocos Sur takes you back to the colonial era. The UNESCO World Heritage site features over 200 preserved historic structures, so you will find it easy to imagine what life might have been like during this time.

Close to Calle Crisologo is the Hotel Luna, a beautiful property that is equal parts hotel and museum.  Built atop a four-story historic structure, the property blends colonial structures and art with modern amenities.

3. Go for a picnic at the MacArthur Landing Memorial National Park

I shall return. See you again soon Leyte! 🛳

As the landing area for General Douglas MacArthur at the beginning of the campaign to end Japanese occupation in the 1940s, the park serves as a reminder of a pivotal time in our nation’s struggle for liberation.

A 30-minute drive from Palo, securing an accommodation in Tacloban is a more flexible option to maximize a trip in the province. The Oriental Leyte, which blends modern design elements with regional Asian culture, is a great option to access the city’s best attractions.

4. Say a prayer at Magellan’s Cross

Located in Cebu City, Magellan’s Cross represents the arrival of Catholicism in the Philippines. Standing underneath a Spanish-style pavilion, the wooden crucifix is believed to be the same cross planted in Cebu in 1521 by Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan.

Enjoy a resort-like experience at Agoda Home Azalea Place Robinsons Cebu. The accommodation is within walking distance of other historical shrines in Cebu City.

5. Embrace nationalism like our National Hero at Rizal Park and Shrine

The latter years of our National Hero, José Rizal, is commemorated in the Rizal Park and Shrine, located in the city of Dapitan. Rizal’s life as a nationalist, educator, writer and doctor during the end of the Spanish colonial period is celebrated through the structures in the protected area. The Rizaliana Museum houses the largest collection of Rizal’s personal items, from the blackboard he used for teaching to his sketchbooks and postcards.

Ariana Hotel is situated in Dipolog City, a well-connected base close to Dapitan. The relaxing and spacious rooms allow you to unwind after spending the whole day immersing yourself in Rizal’s history.

Traveling is more fun when you’re also learning and discovering the story behind the place you’re visiting.
